The American Dream

I'm sick with this new disease
And I am surprised the CDC
Hasn't issued a state of emergency
Everywhere I look
Every neighbor and friend I see
Has this same disease
And to some, it is only getting worse
Our symptoms include
But are not limited to:
Prices for every necessity rising
But wages staying the same
I have two government programs to help with my health insurance
But my copay is still insane
Who cares about owning a home?
When my dream is to just afford rent
A teacher, who I call a friend
Just had a student
Threaten to shoot them
Our food is slowly poising us
But does it matter?
I can't afford groceries anyways
So starving might just be my fate
It is no longer a democracy
If we don't actually get to choose
What is the point of cosplaying choice
When the verdict comes in, we all always lose?
The Capitol is a retirement home
For The Deranged and for The Ill
And I worry the only cure
Is if a Good Samaritan would come through
But how can that ever be
If we are all sick with the same disease
The scientific name?
